Black Ops Cold War Zombies Mode – Trailer, Details, Map & more…

After weeks of anticipation, the Black Ops Cold War Zombies reveal is finally here and it looks insanely creepy. Here’s everything you need to know about the new story, new characters, new map, and more.

Most people know that a Zombies mode is a mainstay of the Treyarch Call of Duty games. Every single entry since World at War has had one, and it’s safe to say that many fans were looking forward to what the developer had in store for Black Ops Cold War – especially since the story technically ended in Black Ops 4.

Even though it took a few weeks, Black Ops Cold War Zombies was finally revealed on September 30, and it’s looking completely different from its previous entries in the series. According to the developer, this new experience will bring a whole new set of characters alongside a completely original story, while still being faithful to what was previously established in BO4.

Story

Black Ops Cold War Zombies puts players in control of a team of characters called Requiem, which is led by the classic character Grigori Weaver from Black Ops 1. The whole story seems like a perfect fusion between a classic Black Ops narrative and a Zombies experience.

In the new story, Requiem team is tasked with investigating an old World War II bunker, filled with “decades-old secrets”. In addition, Treyarch also revealed that another team, led by the Soviets, called Omega Group will be involved with the story in some way, shape, or form.

Map

The base map, called Die Maschine, will feature references to older Zombies maps, including a version of Nacht der Untoten, the original map from World at War. While it’s unclear exactly how big the map is, it seems pretty extensive from the trailer and it should be a while before players have discovered everything it has to offer.

Unfortunately, details on the map itself seem to be scarce but that makes sense, as Treyarch probably wants to save that for the actual release.

Gameplay

Gameplay is where things get a bit different. While the classic, round-based combat is still here, Treyarch is also including a number of new elements in order to keep things fresh. Probably the biggest change is the inclusion of the Exfil.

With this, you can choose to end your current session for the first time ever. You won’t immediately be taken out of the match, however. Instead, you’ll have to face a harder wave of Zombies while attempting to make your way to the helicopter that pulls you out.

Wonder Weapons, like the Ray Gun, will be making their return in Black Ops Cold War Zombies.

Players will also be able to use their own classes that were crafted in the Gunsmith, meaning starting out with a pistol is no longer required. It’s currently unknown how extensive this system will be, as starting with two major weapons with attachments and the works doesn’t sound fair.

Beyond that, you’ll also have new equipment to take advantage of. Not only are Field Upgrades being added to the mode for the first time, but players will also have a new selection of equipment as well, in the form of the War Machine, Sentry Turrets, and even a Chopper Gunner.

Once again, it’ll interesting to see how Treyarch balances these new features, as having the ability to completely decimate a field of Zombies sounds like a ton of fun, but will absolutely require balancing so that it doesn’t feel too easy.

In addition, classic features like perk machines, wall-buys, and Wonder Weapons will be making a comeback. Die Maschine even includes the return of the fan-favorite Juggernog, which was infamously absent in BO4.

All in all, it seems like Black Ops Cold War Zombies is shaping up to be a very interesting experience. While it still maintains the classic Treyarch style, it seems to be changing things up in an interesting way. Here’s hoping it delivers.
